Starting a business: Critical questions

How do you start a business that will be a success? There are many variables to that loaded question due to several different scenarios. That being said here are a few questions that need to be taken into consideration when contemplating starting a new business. Here are just a few:

  • The business opportunity that you want to pursue; is it part of a successful industry that produces products or services that are in demand? This becomes a critical question when it comes to deciding on a direction for advertising of the services or products that are being offered.
  • How much is going to be required to invest in this opportunity to get it off the ground? Is there a significant amount of risk that you are willing to take on?
  • Will the business be home-based, ran part-time or full-time, and will it require the investment of utilizing a storefront location? This answer is critical to what will in turn become overhead expenses for running the specified business. (i.e. rent, utilities)
  • Will these products or services be appealing to a significant number of customers? This is important to the success of your business or the sub-sequential failure of the business.
  • Is there a need for inventory on hand or any special equipment needed to successfully complete tasks at hand? Will items need to be custom made on demand?
  • If employees are going to be needed be aware that this will add to things such as bookkeeping. There will need to be taxes paid, payroll complete, and other accounting tasks that will need to be done to keep the business within legal standing.
  • Will there be health insurance offered to any future employees? If yes, how does that look? Most health insurances require a hefty amount of money if the company has fewer than 10 employees.

Lastly, keep your focus on your goals and stick to your mission statement that you will develop for the business.
