Property taxes: Appeal

One simple thing to help with someone’s personal finances is fighting his or her home property taxes each year. If they own their home they pay property taxes based on a fraction of its exact value. This can differ from state to state. Property taxes are one that most individuals see rising year after year. They are costly, and unfortunately not optional. If an individual fails to comply and pay their property taxes they could have their home seized back by the bank.

The focus should be on getting property taxes reduced so that it is a level playing field, instead of paying more than their fair share. Again, the procedure to do this may vary, but generally when you receive the tax bills for the upcoming year, they give you 30 days to file an appeal.

There are various grounds on which to appeal the property taxes. The first being if there are any errors on the property report such as incorrect amount of bedrooms, bathrooms etc. Another way is if the other homes in the area that is in their home’s tax category, but is paying less than they are. Lastly, if the home is not worth what the county tax assessor is saying that they think it is worth.

It is recommended to check with the county assessors office on finding the correct procedure to file the appeal. They should be able to give them any information that has to be documented to complete a successful appeal. Keep in mind it isn’t too difficult to appeal the property taxes, but it does need persistence on the homeowners part.
