Managing: 21st century changes

Old cliqued managerial thinking has slowly moved into new approaches that are taking advantage of more modern ways of thinking. Some of those approaches can start with leveling the organizational structure by removing the many layers of management. This will streamline the channels that are needed to complete orders and informational flow.

Another way is to encourage group participation when it comes to making decisions. Have employees work as a team to collaborate ideas on how to efficiently complete their each specific job requirements. This could include scheduling, ensuring quality, and setting the standards of performance. It has been shown when employees have input on what needs to be done they are more committed to seeing it followed through and accomplished.

Implement all encompassing project management. What this means is that a manager will supervise the full scope project from beginning to end. That will require them to coordinate multiple departments other than their own. A way to save money is to outsource rather than having employees complete certain aspects. Many companies in this day and age subcontract different phases of specific jobs. This also may require the company’s employees to coordinate their work with outside firms.

Instead of having large inventories of supplies or finished products, take on the theory of on-demand delivery. This would come on as needed basis, and the team leaders would organize scheduling and ensure that the deliveries are done. Restructuring business processes will take time, and sometimes be hit and miss, but nevertheless the results are worth it. It is important for the company and its managers to rethink each and every aspect of their jobs in order to implement any amount of changes that are needed.

Keep in mind to not be afraid of trying new approaches. There is always as risk involved when it comes to any form of change, but the end results are making the company more profitable and effective. The team approach has been one that has gained much success because it gives the employees the hands on and input to complete the job.
